Ouroboros Steak project explores food future using human cells

The Ouroboros Steak project, a speculative design initiative, explores the future of food by proposing the cultivation of tissue from human cells. Developed by scientist Andrew Pelling, artist Orkan Telhan, and industrial designer Grace Knight, the project was featured in the Beazley Designs of the Year exhibition at the Design Museum in London.

The concept involves using cells harvested from the inside of the cheek, which are then grown in controlled conditions. To nourish the cells, the project explored using serum produced from human blood that has been discarded after donations. The name Ouroboros refers to the ancient symbol of a serpent biting its own tail, representing a continuous cycle where an individual provides cells to potentially produce food for their own consumption.

Creators emphasize that this is not a commercial food product intended for sale. Instead, it serves as a provocative artistic and scientific tool to spark discussions regarding the ethical limits of biotechnology, the sustainability of the food industry, and the advancements in cultivated meat production.
