Ousainou Darboe calls for opposition unity in The Gambia
Ousainou Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), is advocating for opposition unity ahead of the December 5 presidential election in The Gambia. Darboe suggested that while leadership disputes between coalitions like Gambia First, Coalition 2026, and Team Gambia remain a challenge, they are not unresolvable. However, his vision of unity centers on the UDP’s existing presidential candidacy, which may complicate negotiations with other political movements seeking equal partnership.
Darboe also advised opposition voters to support candidates with a realistic chance of victory to avoid wasting votes and to facilitate political change. He expressed confidence in the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to manage the electoral process smoothly. Additionally, Darboe criticized the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) for a planned rally, urging President Adama Barrow to distance himself from events that could potentially divide the country along tribal lines.
