Ousainou Darboe pledges TRRC implementation and reform within five years

Ousainou Darboe, leader of The Gambia’s United Democratic Party (UDP), has pledged to implement the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) within five years if elected president. Speaking at a fundraising event in Switzerland, Darboe emphasized that national reconciliation cannot occur without justice for victims of human rights violations committed during the era of former President Yahya Jammeh.

Darboe also outlined plans for legal reforms, aiming to review and repeal unjust laws, and economic policies focused on increasing Gambian ownership of strategic national assets. He argued that while foreign investment is acceptable, Gambians should be prioritized during the sale of key sectors.

Aji Yam Secka, the UDP deputy leader, supported these ambitions, stating that Darboe could achieve significant national reform within a single five-year term. Secka noted that while Darboe’s age might preclude him from seeking a second term, his experience and respect for the rule of law would allow him to advance the country’s development and regulate key sectors effectively.
