Ousmane Sonko challenges Senegal presidential dismissal, sparks legal debate

Senegal's opposition leader Ousmane Sonko publicly contested his dismissal by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, demanding a clear, unilateral announcement of the decision and describing the move as a unilateral rupture of their political partnership. Sonko insisted the president assume responsibility for the dismissal before the public, accusing the administration of trying to disguise the split as a mutual agreement.

Legal scholars note that Sonko’s subsequent reinstatement to the National Assembly is protected by the Assembly’s internal regulations rather than the electoral code. Professor Meissa Diakhaté argues that challenges based on the electoral code are misplaced, making a serious contestation of Sonko’s return unlikely, and highlighting gaps in Senegalese law that shield the reinstatement.
