Ousmane Sonko denies blocking Senegal's 2026 finance law

Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, has denied allegations that the legislature is intentionally blocking the examination of the 2026 amended finance law (LFR). Speaking at the opening of the third extraordinary session on September 18, 2026, Sonko stated that the institution has never received official notification or a complete request from the government regarding the 2026 LFR.

Sonko criticized the claims as “political instrumentalization” and “demagoguery,” arguing that presenting the situation as a parliamentary refusal is inaccurate. He called for greater responsibility among political actors to avoid undermining the institution with misinformation. The clarification comes as the government continues working to revise the 2026 budgetary framework.
