Ousmane Sonko targets 2029 Senegal presidency amid policy shifts
Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party and President of the National Assembly, is emerging as a central figure for Senegal’s 2029 presidential election. His political platform focuses on national sovereignty, economic patriotism, and social justice, specifically through the renegotiation of mining and oil contracts. His movement seeks a departure from traditional governance models and neo-colonialism, gaining significant support among the youth.
However, Sonko’s administration has faced international scrutiny regarding human rights. Following the rise of the PASTEF party to power in 2024, the implementation of a harsh anti-gay law in March 2026 led to nearly 100 arrests. This crackdown has created political tension with French allies, such as the La France Insoumise (LFI) party. While LFI leaders like Jean-Luc Mélenchon have expressed disagreement with the homophobic program, the party has maintained a discreet stance toward the ruling Senegalese party following the legislative actions.
