Outdated technology contributes to retail employee burnout

Retail employee burnout is frequently attributed to factors such as pay, scheduling, and customer interactions. However, outdated technology and inefficient point of sale (POS) systems are significant, often overlooked contributors to staff turnover and mental exhaustion.

Beyond technical hurdles, the physical demands of retail contribute to injury rates. According to 2024 Bureau of Labor Statistics data, injury rates per 100 full-time workers were 4.2 in General Merchandise, 3.5 in Food & Beverage, and 3.2 in Garden & Building Material, compared to a private industry average of 2.3.

To combat these issues, experts suggest that implementing intuitive and simple user experiences in POS systems can help reduce the mental tax on employees during high-pressure periods, such as seasonal holiday rushes.
