Outdoor activity interest rises in Iowa as Wisconsin issues rice bed protection guidance

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports a rise in interest regarding hunting, trapping, and other outdoor activities across various age groups. Wildlife biologist Vince Evelsizer noted that this trend began during the pandemic as people sought to explore nature. To support this interest, the DNR provides various instructional courses and online videos, while also encouraging individuals to seek out mentors to learn essential outdoor skills.

In Wisconsin, the Department of Natural Resources is issuing guidance to waterfowl hunters and wild rice harvesters to protect native wild rice beds. As the hunting season approaches, officials are urging participants to maintain safe distances from one another and remain aware of their surroundings.

Harvesters in northern Wisconsin must adhere to date-regulated seasons, with updates provided by the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission. To prevent damage to vulnerable rice beds, the DNR recommends that harvesters use elevated flags and bright clothing for visibility, while boaters are advised to minimize propulsion and avoid driving directly through rice beds.
