Outdoor lighting considerations for autumn temperature and ecology

Seasonal changes in autumn bring challenges for outdoor lighting, both in terms of battery performance and ecological impact. For battery-operated LED chains, temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius significantly reduce voltage and capacity, particularly in alkaline cells. Using NiMH rechargeable batteries or lithium disposable cells is recommended for colder climates, such as higher altitudes in Austria and Switzerland. Additionally, using timers instead of continuous lighting can extend battery life significantly.

Environmental concerns have also been raised regarding solar-powered garden lights. The NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) warns that these lights can pose a threat to nocturnal wildlife. Unlike lights with motion sensors or timers, solar lamps often stay lit for several hours. This constant illumination can be up to 30 lux, far brighter than a full moon (0.1 to 0.3 lux). This can disorient nocturnal insects like moths, which may circle the light until they die of exhaustion or fall prey to predators.
