Outdoor living spaces and maintenance trends in home design
Home design trends are shifting toward more integrated outdoor living spaces, with homeowners increasingly treating patios, terraces, and decks as functional social rooms. According to the American Institute of Architects’ 2025 Home Design Trends Survey, there is growing popularity for covered outdoor spaces and blended indoor-outdoor environments that allow for multiple activities, such as cooking, dining, and lounging, within distinct zones.
As these outdoor areas become central to home entertaining, maintenance becomes a critical factor. Effective care for timber surfaces, such as Kwila, Vitex, or pine, requires a different approach than concrete or paving. Because wood is a natural material with fibers and grain, aggressive high-pressure cleaning can cause damage, such as raising the grain or creating uneven finishes. Proper maintenance must account for the specific timber species, the age of the wood, and existing coatings to ensure the longevity of these social spaces.
