Outokumpu opens €30 million biocoke plant in Finland
Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu has inaugurated a new €30 million biocoke agglomeration plant at its integrated production site in Tornio, Finland. The facility is designed to process biochar into biocoke, a biomass-based substitute for fossil coke used in ferrochrome production.
At full capacity, the plant has the potential to reduce direct CO2 emissions by up to 82,000 metric tons annually. This investment is part of Outokumpu’s broader strategy to achieve a 42% reduction in CO2 emissions across its value chain by 2030, using a 2016 baseline.
Juha Erkkilä, head of Outokumpu EvoCarbon, stated that biocoke production has already commenced in Tornio, serving both internal needs and external customers. The project aims to support the development of lower-carbon stainless steel and strengthen the company’s sustainability position in the industry.
