Ovalle launches new electric bus fleet for public transport

The city of Ovalle in the Coquimbo Region has launched a trial period for a new public transport system featuring 41 electric buses. The fleet operates seven urban routes and includes modern amenities such as universal accessibility, climate control, security cameras, and a fully electronic payment system. Fares are set at $500 for adults, $250 for seniors, and $160 for high school and university students, while primary school students travel for free. The system eliminates cash payments, accepting transport cards, QR codes via application, and bank cards.

The three-month trial period will allow authorities to adjust frequencies based on passenger demand and real-time behavior. This initiative represents a structural change for the city's urban mobility under a regulated framework.

Broadly, Chile is seeing a significant transition toward electromobility, with Santiago hosting one of the largest electric bus fleets globally after China. However, research from the Center for Advanced Transport, Logistics and Economic Competitiveness (CATLEC) indicates challenges in public awareness. While 96% of surveyed individuals in the Metropolitan Region support electric buses due to reduced air and noise pollution, only 49.2% are aware of the National Electromobility Strategy. Economic barriers and infrastructure remain significant hurdles for widespread adoption.
