Ovalle reservoir project strengthens irrigation for local farmers

Agricultural authorities in Coquimbo, Chile, have inspected a new short-regulation reservoir in the El Ingenio sector of Ovalle. The project, owned by farmer Jorge Hernández, received approximately $60 million in subsidies through the National Irrigation Commission (CNR) via the “First Technification Contest for the North-Central Regions.”

The infrastructure allows for the accumulation of 10,480 cubic meters of water, which will strengthen water availability for crops including cherries, pisco grapes, artichokes, flowers, and vines. Officials noted that the project enhances irrigation security, increases productive capacity, and stimulates the local economy by creating labor opportunities.

Rodrigo Órdenes, Regional Coordinator of the CNR, emphasized that water security is built through infrastructure and responsible resource management. The investment aims to bolster the competitiveness and sustainable development of the Chilean agricultural sector.
