Passenger airlifted from cruise ship in Salish Sea
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria conducted a medical evacuation of an ill passenger from the cruise ship Ovation of the Seas. The incident occurred in the Salish Sea, approximately 52 nautical miles northwest of Tofino.
The rescue operation involved a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a CC-295 Kingfisher airplane. The Kingfisher aircraft arrived first to provide over-watch and coordinate the medevac, while search and rescue technicians were lowered from the Cormorant to the ship's deck to prepare the patient. The patient was subsequently hoisted to the aircraft and transported to a hospital in Greater Victoria.
Ovation of the Seas is a 16-deck vessel operated by Royal Caribbean International with a capacity of nearly 5,000 passengers.
