Ovens River approaches major flood levels in Wangaratta

The Ovens River in Wangaratta has approached major flood levels following heavy rainfall in the region. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, river levels reached 12.63 meters on Tuesday, nearing the major flood marker of 12.7 meters. This rise follows significant precipitation, including 67mm of rain in Wangaratta on Sunday, which exceeded the historical August average.

Emergency responders from the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) have been active in the area. Volunteers prepared for rising waters by filling sandbags to protect flood-prone locations, such as the Painters Island Caravan Park. Authorities warned that properties on the Ovens and King river flood plains could be cut off due to heightened water levels.

While rainfall has since eased, the rapid rise was driven by floodwaters from the upper catchment flowing downstream. Other regional rivers, including the Kiewa, Upper Murray, Mitta, and Broken rivers, were also subject to flood warnings. Reports of minor storm damage, such as fallen trees blocking roads, have been noted across North East Victoria.
