Over 90 organizations urge EU to adopt sustainable food system action plan

More than 90 international organizations, including major companies such as Lidl, Nestlé, Danone, and Oatly, have presented a policy action brief to EU leaders calling for a comprehensive plan to create a healthy, sustainable, and resilient food system.

Based on the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission research, the recommendations aim to address pressures on the European food system caused by climate change, diet-related diseases, and economic instability in agriculture. The coalition includes stakeholders from farming, retail, public health, and manufacturing.

A central recommendation shared by all participating groups is the reform of public procurement. The organizations propose voluntary procurement criteria based on the ‘Planetary Health Diet’ for institutions such as schools, hospitals, and elderly care homes to create stable demand for sustainable products. Other proposals include strengthening value chains for sustainable foods, reducing food waste, improving labeling and marketing regulations, and increasing investment in research and development.
