Overijse grape producers report high demand despite heatwave impact

In the Overijse grape region of Belgium, producers are experiencing a season of high demand and exceptional sweetness despite the challenges posed by extreme heat. While sales are increasing, growers report that recent heatwaves have reduced the overall volume of the harvest.

Producers Ronald Vanderkelen and Koen Dewit of Druiven Dewit noted that while the grapes are remarkably sweet, high temperatures in greenhouses—reaching between 40°C and 42°C—caused berries and clusters to shrink in size. White grape varieties have been particularly affected, with some growers reporting a loss in total weight. While dark varieties show more resilience, even large-berried varieties like the Leopold have suffered damage due to stunted growth.

The season coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Overijse Grape Festivals. Growers observe a growing trend where consumer demand for high-quality Belgian grapes is rising, even as the number of active producers continues to decline.
