Authorities in Overijssel have launched a campaign to combat healthcare-related crime, aiming to help residents recognize suspicious activities and report them anonymously. The initiative is a collaboration between Meld Misdaad Anoniem, local municipalities, the police, and the province of Overijssel.

Criminals are increasingly targeting the healthcare sector as a lucrative business model. According to the Public Prosecution Service, billions of euros in healthcare funds are lost to criminal activity annually. This fraud often involves a chain of illicit actors using fake diplomas, certificates, and criminal record checks (VOGs) to pose as qualified professionals. Some criminals also establish fraudulent healthcare agencies or register as independent contractors to gain access to vulnerable clients.

The consequences of this crime are significant, particularly for those in youth, disability, and elderly care. Beyond financial theft, such as the coercion of clients to surrender bank cards or DigiD credentials, there is a high risk of medical errors caused by unqualified individuals providing care.
