Ovidio Guzmán hearing postponed for eighth time in Chicago

Ovidio Guzmán López, known as ‘El Ratón’ and son of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, has had his intermediate hearing in a Chicago federal court postponed for the eighth consecutive time. The hearing, presided over by Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman, has been rescheduled for December 7, 2026.

Guzmán López, a former leader of the ‘Los Chapitos’ faction, pleaded guilty in July 2025 to federal charges including drug trafficking, money laundering, and weapons possession. As part of his plea agreement, he has committed to cooperating with the United States government, providing substantial information regarding criminal organizations. He has also agreed to forfeit approximately $80 million in assets and properties.

The upcoming December hearing will not be the final sentencing. Instead, the U.S. Department of Justice will inform the court whether it intends to pursue a sentence reduction based on the level of cooperation provided by the defendant. Guzmán López is seeking to avoid a life sentence.
