Oviedo celebrates El Desarme culinary tradition
The city of Oviedo is celebrating 'El Desarme', a historical culinary tradition dating back to October 19, 1836. Originally established as a meal of fraternization following military conflicts, it has evolved into a symbol of peace and remains Spain’s oldest uninterrupted menu.
During the second half of October, approximately seventy restaurants in the capital of Asturias offer the traditional 'Peace Menu'. The ritual consists of three specific courses served in a fixed order: chickpeas with cod and spinach, Oviedo-style tripe, and rice pudding.
Recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest, the event includes historical reenactments, period costume contests, and parades. The festivities culminate during the weekend of the Princess of Asturias Awards with the Grand Chapter of the Cofradía del Desarme, featuring parades from members of Spain and neighboring countries.
