Oviedo celebrates the Fiesta del Desarme

The city of Oviedo commemorates the Fiesta del Desarme every October 19, marking a historical victory of liberal forces over French and Carlist troops during the First Carlist War in 1836.

Originally, the celebration involved authorities providing a meal of chickpeas, potatoes, bacon, and meat to local militias. Following the end of the Carlist Wars in 1876, the Oviedo City Council organized a large-scale lunch for citizens, wounded soldiers, and prisoners to promote peace and reconciliation.

Since 1898, the event has evolved into a gastronomic tradition known as the 'Menú del Desarme.' The traditional menu consists of chickpeas with spinach and cod, Asturian-style tripe, and rice pudding for dessert. The celebration, which is recognized as a National Tourist Interest event, has expanded beyond Asturias; for instance, restaurants in Mallorca now also offer the traditional menu to honor the tradition.
