Oviedo celebrates the Day of the Disarmament
The city of Oviedo is celebrating the Day of the Disarmament, a tradition that combines historical reenactment with local gastronomy. The event commemorates the October 1836 attempt by Carlist troops to take the city, which was defended by liberal forces.
To mark the occasion, participants in the historical reenactments, including Isabelinos and Carlists, gathered for the traditional ‘Menú de la Paz’ (Peace Menu). This symbolic meal serves as a gesture of reconciliation, where former adversaries share regional dishes such as chickpeas with cod and spinach, Oviedo-style tripe, and rice pudding.
The celebration, recognized as a National Tourist Interest festival, is supported by the Cofradía Gastronómica del Desarme. It serves as a significant cultural and social gathering for residents and visitors, blending the city's historical identity with its culinary traditions.
