Oxfam warns IMF austerity targets have quadrupled since 2018
Oxfam has issued a warning regarding the International Monetary Fund (IMF) increasing austerity measures for countries receiving financial support. According to an analysis by the NGO, the average public spending reduction targets imposed by the IMF have quadrupled since 2018, rising from 0.21% to 0.85% of GDP for 2025.
Oxfam expresses concern that these policies represent a return to the ‘shock therapy’ fiscal adjustment models of the 1980s, which exacerbated poverty. The organization argues that these cuts undermine essential spending on public services, including health, education, and housing, disproportionately affecting low-income communities.
Nabil Abdo, a senior policy advisor at Oxfam, stated that the IMF is being led back into the ‘dark ages’ of fiscal adjustment. The NGO further warns of ‘front-loaded fiscal adjustment,’ where countries in economic distress are required to implement immediate cuts upon the approval of loan programs.
