Oxfam France sues French state over alleged tax inequality
Oxfam France has filed a legal appeal against the French state, alleging failures in maintaining a fair and equal tax system. The NGO filed a formal request for reconsideration, stating that if a satisfactory response is not received within two months, it will pursue litigation through the administrative court.
Director General Cécile Duflot criticized the current system as unequal, claiming that large fortunes exploit various loopholes. The organization cites three specific failures by the state: the inability to guarantee equality before tax law, the failure to effectively combat tax fraud, and the lack of assessment regarding the effects of fiscal policies.
Specific measures cited in the appeal include the abolition of the wealth tax and the 'Pacte Dutreil,' which allows for a 75% exemption on inheritance taxes for business transmissions under certain conditions. While the legal action may take years and the court cannot directly force changes to fiscal policy due to the separation of powers, Oxfam aims to shift the public debate toward 'tax justice' and influence the 2027 presidential election agenda.
