Oxford County OPP launches Operation Safe Start for school bus safety

The Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are launching ‘Operation Safe Start’ to enhance student safety as the new school year begins. The initiative will run from September 8–11 and September 14–18, focusing on increased traffic volumes around schools and along bus routes during morning and afternoon periods.

Officers will conduct targeted enforcement throughout county municipalities, monitoring driver behavior regarding school-zone speed limits and school-bus safety laws. The goal is to prevent collisions, speeding, distracted driving, and violations involving stopped buses. Police emphasize that motorists must stop at least 20 metres away when approaching a bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm.

Authorities remind drivers that children can be unpredictable and may enter roadways unexpectedly. Drivers are urged to obey posted speed limits, watch for crossing guards, and avoid distractions like mobile phones to ensure safe boarding and unloading for students.
