Oxford Street to become pedestrian zone in London

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced that a one-kilometre section of Oxford Street will be permanently closed to vehicular traffic starting October 26. The initiative aims to revitalize one of Europe’s busiest shopping districts, which has faced challenges from the rise of e-commerce and shifting consumer habits.

The pedestrian zone will span from Selfridges near Marble Arch to Great Portland Street, including the Oxford Circus intersection. To facilitate the transition, ten bus lines will be rerouted. While emergency services will maintain access, delivery vehicles will only be permitted between midnight and 7:00 am. Bicycles, e-bikes, and e-scooters will also be prohibited from the new pedestrianized section.

Mayor Khan expressed optimism that the transformation will attract high-quality retail brands and increase tourism and leisure activities ahead of the Christmas shopping season. However, local Conservative representatives have raised concerns regarding practical implementation, specifically citing potential issues with air pollution, street cleaning, public safety, and business access.
