Oxford study finds organic egg farming trade-offs

A study published in Royal Society Open Science by researchers at the University of Oxford indicates that a wholesale transition to organic and free-range egg production in the UK could significantly increase environmental impacts. The research suggests that such a shift could raise greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 60% and nearly double land use compared to caged production, assuming total egg output remains constant.

The findings highlight a complex trade-off between animal welfare and environmental sustainability. While free-range and organic models are preferable for hen welfare, they require larger hen populations and more resources to produce the same volume of eggs as intensive caged systems. This increased scale leads to higher levels of water eutrophication, acidification, and land use.

Researchers noted that the study is limited by its use of data from 2009–2010, which may not reflect recent industry developments, and it did not account for factors like biodiversity. The authors emphasized that the findings are not an argument for returning to caged systems, but rather a call to consider animal welfare, environmental impact, and food production efficiency together when shaping future farming policies.
