Oxxo ordered to pay R$ 2 million over worker security failures

The Labor Court, through the Regional Labor Court of the 15th Region (TRT-15), has ordered the convenience store chain Oxxo to pay R$ 2 million in collective moral damages. The ruling follows a public civil action by the Labor Public Ministry (MPT) regarding inadequate security measures that exposed employees to robberies, thefts, and armed violence.

Investigations, which originated from complaints at a unit in Campinas, São Paulo, revealed that some stores operated 24 hours a day with minimal staffing. During night shifts, some locations were managed by a single attendant without the presence of security professionals. The MPT noted that the company’s security model was primarily reactive and focused on protecting assets rather than personnel.

In the city of São Paulo, criminal incidents involving the chain—including robberies and invasions—rose from 320 in 2023 to 1,053 in 2024. The court has mandated that Oxxo implement new protective measures across its stores, including the presence of security guards during night hours in high-risk locations, the installation of protective barriers, and the provision of medical, psychological, and legal assistance to affected employees.
