Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde launches Judicial Commission to probe May 2026 school abduction
On 15 May 2026 gunmen abducted pupils and teachers from three schools in the Esinele and Yawota (Ahoro‑Esinele) communities of Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State. Forty‑four children and teachers were taken; two teachers and several security personnel were killed. After a joint operation by the Nigerian Army, police and other security agencies, the victims were released on 10 July 2026, 56 days after the kidnapping.
Governor Seyi Makinde inaugurated an eight‑member Judicial Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Professor Mojeed Owoade, and gave it four weeks to complete its mandate, with the option to request an extension. The commission is tasked with establishing the facts, identifying institutional and operational lapses, and recommending measures to strengthen protection of schools and communities.
Makinde also called on the United Nations to conduct an independent investigation, stressing that the request was not intended to undermine the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies. He faced accusations that his administration had orchestrated the kidnapping and said the probe was meant to refute those claims and restore public confidence. The governor quoted, “Rescue brings relief, but truth brings closure.”
