Oyo State Receives Two Surveillance Aircraft to Boost Security
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde took delivery of two Diamond DA42 MNG intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft at the upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan on 28 July 2026. The aircraft, purchased for roughly ₦7.76 billion, were re‑assembled at a Nigerian Air Force hangar in Lagos before being handed to the state. Under a memorandum of understanding with the Nigerian Air Force, the platforms will support the Amotekun Corps and other security formations by providing aerial intelligence, rapid response capability and monitoring of borders with Kwara State and the Republic of Benin. The acquisition, announced in July 2025, is part of Makinde’s long‑term security strategy to complement ground forces across Oyo’s 33 local government areas, a response to the state’s large landmass rather than a reaction to recent school kidnappings. The governor said the aircraft will be operational immediately and represent a major milestone in the state’s effort to safeguard lives and property.
