Oyo State to bring hospitality businesses into tax net

The Oyo State Government has announced a plan to integrate all hospitality businesses, including hotels and lounges, into the state tax system. The initiative aims to improve data collection, boost revenue generation, and strengthen security coordination across the sector.

Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism Development, stated that many hospitality operators in the state have not yet registered with authorities, while some registered businesses fail to remit statutory dues regularly. This lack of compliance has hindered the state’s ability to maintain an accurate database and generate necessary revenue.

The government is implementing a three-stage process: identification, cooperation, and enforcement. Following the current engagement phase, the enforcement stage is expected to begin in the coming months. Operators are also being asked to submit monthly records of customer patronage to assist the Oyo State Bureau of Statistics in developing a comprehensive database for planning and security purposes.
