Ozempic may reduce asthma attacks, according to UK study

Research published by scientists in the United Kingdom suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide (marketed as Ozempic and Wegovy), may provide benefits for respiratory health. By analyzing real-world medical records of UK residents, researchers found that patients using GLP-1 medications were significantly less likely to report asthma attacks or other acute respiratory issues compared to those treated with other diabetes medications, such as sulfonylureas.

Chloe Bloom, a respiratory disease epidemiologist at Imperial College London, noted that while the findings suggest a potential reduction in respiratory attacks, the results require confirmation through clinical trials. The study aimed to address the lack of research regarding whether these drugs, which are widely used for obesity and type 2 diabetes, could also alleviate conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
