P-Konto: Essential facts for debt protection

A Pfändungsschutzkonto, or P-Konto, serves as a critical financial tool for individuals facing high debt and potential account seizures. Converting a standard checking account into a P-Konto allows debtors to protect a portion of their funds, ensuring they can still cover essential costs such as rent, bills, and basic living expenses.

As of July 2026, the basic non-seizable amount is set at 1,590 euros per calendar month. This threshold can increase for individuals with maintenance obligations, such as those supporting a partner or children. The P-Konto ensures that funds above the legal limit are subject to seizure, while the remaining balance stays available to the account holder without requiring individual court approvals for every transaction.
