Paapa Essiedu addresses backlash over Harry Potter casting

Actor Paapa Essiedu has stated he would not have accepted the role of Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter series if he were unable to handle the resulting backlash. Speaking at the TIME100 Next Gala, Essiedu addressed the reaction to his casting, which features a distinct aesthetic including shoulder-length dreadlocks and a leather jacket, differing from previous adaptations.

Essiedu previously disclosed receiving racially motivated death threats regarding his casting. He noted that these experiences have fueled his desire to make the character his own. He expressed gratitude for the support of his colleagues and emphasized that his primary focus remains the work.

The first season of the Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25.
