Paapa Essiedu addresses casting controversy for Harry Potter role
Actor Paapa Essiedu has spoken out regarding his casting as Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter series. Speaking at the TIME100 Next gala, Essiedu addressed the controversy surrounding the decision to cast a Black actor in a role originally described in J.K. Rowling’s books as having pale skin and black hair.
Essiedu stated that he is aware of the challenges and the wide range of reactions to the casting, emphasizing that his primary focus remains on the work and the depth of the character. He noted that the production is not attempting to recreate Alan Rickman’s previous portrayal, as evidenced by a new visual direction featuring longer dreadlocks and a leather jacket.
Despite facing significant backlash, including reported death threats, Essiedu expressed gratitude for the support from the crew and the public. He mentioned that the experience motivates him to provide representation for children who share his background.
