Pabel Muñoz criticizes proposal to transfer Quito traffic control
Quito Mayor Pabel Muñoz has reacted sharply to a legislative proposal that would allow the National Transit Agency (ANT) to assume municipal traffic control competencies in specific cases. Responding to comments from legislator Valentina Centeno, Muñoz stated that if the central government believes it can manage these responsibilities, it should do so, while urging lawmakers to focus on national issues rather than interfering with local administrations.
Muñoz noted that while traffic issues require structural solutions—such as addressing the influx of low-cost vehicles from China that contribute to congestion—municipalities should retain their authority. Additionally, the Mayor addressed security in the capital, highlighting the effectiveness of the Plan de Protección de Quito, which involves coordinated efforts between local authorities and the deployment of 4,000 additional military and police personnel.
