Pablo Fernández announces candidacy for Madrid Mayoralty
Pablo Fernández, the Secretary of Organization and national spokesperson for Podemos, has announced his intention to run for the Mayoralty of Madrid in the 2027 municipal elections. Fernández will participate in the party's internal primaries, scheduled to take place between October 5 and October 11, with results expected on October 13.
Fernández’s campaign focuses on criticizing the current administration led by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida and targeting what he describes as the influence of powerful figures like Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez. He has characterized Madrid as a city becoming increasingly difficult to live in due to high rents, saturated public transport, and insufficient social services. He aims to present a “distinctly left-wing” candidacy to counter the current political model.
The announcement highlights a potential fragmentation of the progressive vote in Madrid, as Podemos may compete separately from other left-leaning groups such as Más Madrid, PSOE, and Izquierda Unida. Madrid Mayor Martínez-Almeida responded to the announcement with irony, questioning Fernández's political future, while Fernández countered by accusing the mayor of classism and prioritizing tourists over residents.
