Pablo Gomez identified as worker killed in California trench collapse
Pablo Gomez, a 34-year-old excavation worker and former goalkeeper for the Modesto City Football Club, has been identified as the victim of a fatal trench collapse in California's Central Valley.
The incident occurred near Hickman Road and Lake Road, where Gomez was pinned underground for several hours during an extensive rescue operation that ultimately failed to save him. The Modesto City Football Club released a statement expressing condolences to the family and the local community.
The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and whether proper safety measures, such as shoring or shielding, were in place. This tragedy marks the second fatal trench collapse in California this summer, following an incident in Stockton in August that killed two workers.
