Pablo Hernández de Cos emerges as favorite to lead ECB

Pablo Hernández de Cos, the former Governor of the Bank of Spain and current Director General of the Bank for International Settlements, is the leading candidate to succeed Christine Lagarde as President of the European Central Bank (ECB). According to a Bloomberg survey of economists, Hernández de Cos is favored by 12 respondents, while nine prefer Klaas Knot, the former head of the Dutch central bank.

Both candidates are former members of the ECB Governing Council and have received explicit support from their respective governments. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has endorsed Hernández de Cos, citing his leadership and expertise. Meanwhile, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has expressed support for Knot, highlighting his pragmatism.

The candidates represent different monetary philosophies. Knot is characterized as a 'hawk' due to his history of advocating for austerity and restrictive monetary policy. In contrast, Hernández de Cos is viewed as more 'dovish' or open to innovation, focusing on the ECB’s dual mandate of managing both inflation and economic growth.
