Pablo Álvarez discusses his Azorín Prize-winning novel

Editor and literary agent Pablo Álvarez discusses his novel, ‘La necesidad de amar’ (Planeta), which earned him the Premio Azorín. The book is a coming-of-age story centered on Martí Rocamora, a young man who travels to Rome on a scholarship.

Álvarez describes the work as a tribute to those living on the margins of society. Set in the 1980s, the narrative explores a complex love triangle involving the characters Viola and Thomas, whom the author characterizes as ‘monsters in love’ due to their non-conformity with social norms of that era. He emphasizes the importance of mistakes in the process of self-discovery and the emotional transition from youthful idealism to the realities of adulthood.
