Pablo Marçal registers presidential candidacy amid ineligibility ruling

Pablo Marçal has registered his candidacy for the Presidency of Brazil through the PRTB party, despite facing significant legal hurdles. He remains ineligible until 2032 following a ruling by the Regional Electoral Court of São Paulo (TRE-SP), which cited the improper use of social media during his 2024 campaign for the São Paulo mayoralty.

Marçal's candidacy is currently considered 'sub judice' as the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) must decide whether to approve his registration. While a recent injunction allowed him to formalize his party affiliation retroactively, it did not overturn his ineligibility. Until a final decision is reached, he is permitted to conduct campaign activities, though his access to debates and television time remains uncertain.

Controversy has also surrounded Marçal's financial disclosures. He declared assets totaling R$ 7.4 billion, a figure that is over 43 times higher than the R$ 169.5 million he reported in 2024. Marçal has claimed this massive increase was a typing error and has requested a correction, though he has not provided the accurate value to the TSE.
