Pablo Picasso: 145th anniversary of the legendary artist's birth

The world commemorates the 145th anniversary of the birth of Pablo Picasso, who was born in Málaga, Spain, on October 25, 1881. A transformative figure in 20th-century Western art, Picasso was a painter, sculptor, engraver, and ceramicist known for his continuous experimentation with style and technique.

His prolific career spanned over 80 years, resulting in an estimated 50,000 works, including nearly 2,000 paintings. His artistic evolution included the Blue Period, characterized by somber tones depicting the poor, and the Rose Period, which featured circus performers and harlequins. He is most notably recognized as a pioneer of Cubism, a movement that revolutionized perspective through works like ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’.

Beyond his stylistic innovations, Picasso’s work often carried deep political and emotional weight. His masterpiece ‘Guernica’ remains a universal symbol of the suffering caused by war, created in response to the bombing of the Spanish town during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso’s early life was marked by both artistic mentorship from his father and personal tragedy, including the loss of his sister.
