Pacific and Indian leaders emphasize maritime security and sovereignty

Pacific defense leaders at the South Pacific Defence Ministers’ Meeting emphasized a willingness to deepen security cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners while prioritizing national sovereignty. Australian Assistant Minister for Defence Peter Khalil noted that regional partners, including Japan and Indonesia, are already making constructive contributions to maintaining a free, open, and stable Pacific. Fiji’s Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua added that cooperation between Pacific nations and partner forces is well-established through peacekeeping and regional stabilization efforts.

In a separate development, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the expanding global reach of the Indian Navy. Speaking at the Navy’s Commanders' Conference, Singh stated that deployments from the South China Sea to the Atlantic Ocean demonstrate India’s growing blue-water maritime capabilities. He called for enhanced maritime surveillance to address increasing sea congestion and grey-zone activities, framing naval modernization as a key component of the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision.
