Pacific children face increased online safety risks

A regional study titled ‘Online Safety in the Pacific’ has found that children in the Pacific region require enhanced online safety education and protection as internet connectivity expands. The research, conducted in the Solomon Islands, Kiribati, and Papua New Guinea, highlights that limited previous access to digital technology has hindered children's ability to develop necessary skills to identify and respond to online threats.

The report was produced by the Young and Resilient Research Centre at Western Sydney University, ChildFund Australia, and Plan International Australia. Findings indicate that while children utilize digital technology for education, news, and entertainment, they face significant risks including cyberbullying, hacking, harmful content, and exposure to sexual or violent material.

Parents and caregivers expressed concerns regarding the impact of internet use on cultural values, health, and behavior. The study also noted that girls are perceived as more vulnerable to online risks than boys. As new cable systems provide faster and more affordable internet, the report warns that governments, schools, and communities must increase efforts to protect young users.
