Pacific climate leaders push for integrity ahead of COP31 pre-events

Pacific leaders and Transparency International are calling for strengthened integrity and transparency in climate governance ahead of the COP31 preparations. While Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has worked to position Pacific climate priorities at the center of global discussions, an Australia-organized United Nations pre-COP event in Fiji and Tuvalu faces low international attendance.

Only five leaders from outside the Pacific region are expected to attend the upcoming four-day event in October. Confirmed attendees include leaders from Antigua and Barbuda, Cabo Verde, Thailand, Maldives, and Timor-Leste, along with ministers from Germany, Mexico, and South Korea. The event is part of a compromise deal that will see the main COP31 summit held in Antalya, Turkey, rather than Adelaide, Australia.

The Australian government is expected to spend $150 million to support Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen’s role and the hosting costs for Fiji and Tuvalu. Opposition spokesmen have criticized the low turnout and the expenditure, labeling the event an ‘embarrassment’ and a ‘vanity project’.
