Pacific Conference of Churches calls for review of Israel-PIF partnership

The Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC) has called for a review of Israel’s new status as a second-tier development partner with the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF). Representing Christian churches across 18 countries and territories, the PCC has requested that all engagement with Israel be suspended until the country complies with United Nations resolutions and International Court of Justice rulings regarding the occupation of Palestinian territory.

The partnership was announced following acceptance by Pacific leaders, though the PCC noted the decision was made without a formal statement from the PIF or sufficient consultation with local communities. Civil society groups, including the Pacific Regional Non-Governmental Organisations (PRNGO), have also criticized the move, arguing it undermines the Forum’s founding commitment to regional decolonisation.

While some regional leaders, such as Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka, have expressed strong support for the relationship with Israel, critics argue the decision contradicts the Pacific’s history of resisting colonisation and environmental destruction.
