Pacific Conference of Churches calls for review of Israel’s PIF partnership
The Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC) is calling for a review of Israel’s recent acceptance as a second-tier partner of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF). Representing Christian churches across 18 countries and territories, the PCC has requested that all engagement with Israel be suspended until the nation complies with United Nations resolutions and International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulings.
PCC General Secretary Reverend James Bhagwan expressed surprise at the announcement, noting that the PIF had not issued an official statement regarding the partnership. Bhagwan argued that Pacific leaders should consult local communities and apply consistent standards to international relations, citing the ICJ’s 2024 statement regarding the occupation of Palestinian territory.
In contrast, Fijian Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka stated that the Pacific Islands identify with Israel through a relationship described as “biblical, ageless and real.” Additionally, New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters remarked that criticizing Israel’s inclusion in the PIF is an insult to Pacific Island nations and that the leaders' decision should be respected.
