The Pacific island nation formerly known as Nauru has formally changed its name to the Republic of Naoero. President David Adeang announced that the change aligns the English name with the spelling and pronunciation used in the Nauruan language.

Parliament unanimously approved a constitutional amendment in May 2026, and the government decided not to hold a referendum, stating that the name Naoero is already part of the national identity and appears on the coat of arms. The international country code will switch from NRU to NRO, and citizens will be referred to as dei‑Naoero instead of Nauruans.

The United Nations and several foreign ministries, including those of Australia, New Zealand, the United States and China, have updated their records to reflect the new name. Officials describe the move as a cultural correction rather than a political shift, aimed at honoring the country’s heritage, language and ancestral legacy.
