Pacific Islands Forum addresses West Papua, China, and maritime security
At the 55th Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, regional leaders addressed several critical security and diplomatic issues. The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) reaffirmed its demand for the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit West Papua before December 31, 2026. The MSG warned that Indonesia’s associate member status would be reviewed at the 2027 summit if this access is not granted.
Regarding regional security, Forum leaders issued a joint communiqué expressing concern over a recent Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile test. The group called for a 24-hour advance notice for any such tests to respect the sovereignty of the Blue Pacific.
In Fiji, the Revenue and Customs Service emphasized that proposed border security cooperation with Australia, through the Vuvale Union and Veitacini Treaty, must respect national sovereignty. The agency noted that these arrangements will significantly impact how Fiji manages intelligence, cargo, and sensitive passenger data.
