Pacific Islands Forum faces tension over Taiwan's presence

Tensions rose during the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting held in Palau from August 31 to September 3, 2026, as China reacted to the presence of Taiwan at the gathering. Taiwan serves as a development partner to the forum, and its Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, attended the event.

China’s Pacific envoy, Qian Bo, initially threatened ‘consequences’ regarding Taiwan’s participation. This followed a formal warning from China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism advising Chinese citizens to avoid Palau due to robbery risks, a move viewed as retaliation. However, Qian did not mention Taiwan during his official statement, following pushback from Pacific leaders. New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters asserted that the forum does not take instructions from outside entities.

Palau, which maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan, hosted the meeting. Forum chairman and Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr stated that the Pacific Islands are ‘the captain of the ship,’ a remark interpreted as a signal for regional autonomy against external pressure.
